Introduction

RealMCP is a WordPress plugin that adds an MCP server to your site. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard AI assistants use to connect to other systems. Once it’s connected, you can ask your assistant to read your pages, design a new one with your theme’s colors and spacing, or update an existing page, and it does the work on your site.

  1. Your AI client (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Claude Desktop) starts @ballesdev/wp-realmcp, a small program that runs on your computer.
  2. The bridge forwards each request to your site over HTTPS, signed with a WordPress Application Password.
  3. The plugin answers at /wp-json/ballesdev/mcp and runs the request as the WordPress user who owns that Application Password, with that user’s permissions.

The AI can use seven tools: it reads the site context, pages, blocks, patterns and media, and it saves pages. See the tools reference.

  • No extra plugins. WordPress 6.9 ships the Abilities API; RealMCP registers its tools there and serves its own MCP endpoint. Sites that also run the MCP Adapter plugin can use the same tools.
  • Safe by default. New pages are drafts. Updates are rejected if the page changed since the AI read it. The AI can never do more than the connected user can.
  • Under your control. Administrators can turn tools off and review every call in the activity log.
  • WordPress 6.9 or later, with PHP 8.1 or later.
  • HTTPS on your site: WordPress only offers Application Passwords over HTTPS.
  • A user who can edit pages, such as an Editor or an Administrator.
  • Node.js 22 or later on the computer where your AI client runs.
